On-Off fan clutch

So most of my engine noise comes from the fan. The viscous fan clutch is probably somewhat faulty by now, so a new fan clutch would probably remedy this somewhat. However I have been toying with the idea of somehow switching to an on-off fan clutch like a truck uses. I finally found a 12v clutch that looks pretty adaptable. Can anyone see any downsides to this?

You’ll be able to run that off a thermostatic switch, right? Seems like a pretty good setup, there’s no drag when it’s off, and lots of air when it’s switched on.

Something like that would pull a lot less amps out of the batt and alternator as well. Those all-electric fans usually draw quite a bit of current.

That would be the idea, yes, use either a straight thermoswitch, or a temp sensor and a fan controller. Probably the former.

The clutch amp draw is 6a I believe.

Yeah 6a is better than 20a continuous..
I never knew something like this existed.
Pretty awesome idea.

Sounds awesome! I’d love to read more about this. Details please!

:thinking:Thinking more about this..
I recon it probably wouldn’t take to much to pinch a Mag Clutch off a spare Aircon Pump?
On a 6ve1.. Modifying the original “triangle” Fan pulley mount or fabricate a new plate wouldn’t take too long..?

Thanks @MudOilnGears
I was trying to work out how I’m going to install On board Air and a second battery on the Ute.
But now I’m trying to find all the spare Aircon Pumps i’ve got, to see what Might work for my fan.:face_savoring_food:

Those Electro Magnet’s work better than a dust brush for metal shavings..
I shit you not.

I explored the “modding an ac clutch” option. Way too complicated. I’ll write up what my plan is here in a while. Just need to make sure I’m thinking correctly.

So the reason modding an ac clutch becomes complicated, is that they are designed to drive a shaft behind and within themselves. I explored using an existing fan clutch, but the electric ones are either too big, or are PWM controlled. It wouldn’t be impossible to build a PWM contorller, but that’s more complication thatn I wanted.

So I started digging… And found a simple through shaft on-off clutch, with a face mounted drive. All that needs to be done is make or modify a shaft with a flange on it, just like the original fanclutch, and make a flat plate flange adapter between the fan blades and the clutch face.

My only concern is weight, but I believe the reaction arm of the clutch can be used to also partially support its weight.

Yeah.. I kinda see your point with the AC clutch..
The fan would basically have to be fixed onto the Clutch plate. I couldn’t see it lasting very long…
I’m not putting the idea to rest just yet though.

What is that unit off?

Have you seen these controllers on Amazon?

You can have it adjustable
Temp vs Fan speed or just fixed speed on and off.

I hadn’t. But not sure I trust $15 electronics with my engine’s life. Also not sure the signal would be the can for a PWM clutch or not.

Don’t Trust cheap electronics?
Me neither to a point.

That’s why you buy stuff like that two at a time.

The controller or the headgasket?

It’s a salt spreader clutch.
